Who can join the study?
-Pregnant woman
-Single gestation
-Smoke cigarettes
-Less than 22 weeks pregnant
-Have never had kidney stones

How long is the study?
-You will be in the study through the end of your pregnancy and until your baby is 1 year old.

What treatments will be given through the study?
-Vitamin C (500 mg tablets) or placebo tablets
-Standard prenatal vitamin

How many measurement visits are in the study?
-Study staff will meet with you monthly, usually at your scheduled prenatal visit.
-There are 3 more lengthy study visits during your pregnancy
-2 visits with your child where their lung function will be measured.

What happens at the study visits?
-While you are pregnant, blood and urine will be collected 3 times.
-During pregnancy, questions will be asked about your smoking at each prenatal visit
-Measurements of how your infant’s lungs are working will be done when they are 3 and 12 months old.

Will the study cost me anything?
-No cost to being in the study
-Prenatal vitamins provided

Will I be compensated for time and effort?

-Time and travel reimbursement available for completed tests and study visits.

What is wheezing?
-Wheezing is a whistling sound that can happen when someone is having difficulty breathing. It can happen with a cough, cold, or other illnesses and often happens in infants who will go on to be diagnosed with asthma.
